GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the discipline of making your brand, products and content easy for generative AI systems to find, understand and cite. These systems (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and others) do not simply return a list of links: they retrieve information from multiple sources and write a synthesised answer.
In eCommerce, GEO focuses especially on three areas:
- Structured and complete product data (feeds, schema, clear attributes)
- Product pages and content that answer buying questions directly and factually
- Presence on third-party sources that AIs consult (reviews, round-ups, Reddit, YouTube, editorial articles)
Unlike traditional SEO, whose goal is to rank pages in search results, GEO aims to be included inside the AI-generated answer — whether through a brand mention, a citation with a link, or a product recommendation.
A well-executed GEO strategy enables you to:
- Increase the likelihood that your products are recommended when a shopper asks an AI “what are the best…?”
- Better control how your brand is described in AI answers
- Complement SEO, because generative engines still rely on crawlable, authoritative and well-structured content
- Prepare the store for the growth of product discovery via AI assistants and shopping agents
GEO does not replace SEO. It remains essential to have indexable pages, structured data and authority. What changes is the success metric: instead of ranking position and clicks, it becomes the rate of mentions and citations in AI answers for a fixed set of questions relevant to your catalogue.
