Schema Markup (also known as structured data) is a standardised vocabulary from Schema.org that allows you to mark up page content in a machine-readable way. Instead of Google or an AI having to “guess” what a piece of text means, Schema explicitly states: “this is a product”, “this is the price”, “this is the average rating”, “this is the availability”, and so on.
In eCommerce, the most relevant Schema types are:
- Product and Offer (name, price, currency, availability, SKU, images)
- AggregateRating and Review (ratings and reviews)
- BreadcrumbList (navigation)
- FAQPage (frequently asked questions)
- Organization and WebSite (brand and store information)
The most common and recommended implementation is via JSON-LD, placed in the <head> or body of the page. WooCommerce plugins (such as Rank Math, Yoast or dedicated schema solutions) make this markup easier, but it is essential to verify that the generated data is accurate and complete.
Proper Schema Markup enables you to:
- Appear with rich results (star ratings, price, availability) in search results
- Improve how generative engines (GEO) and AI assistants understand your catalogue
- Increase the clarity of product data sent to feeds (Google Merchant Center, for example)
- Reduce ambiguities that harm both classic SEO and citation in AI answers
Schema Markup alone does not guarantee higher rankings or AI mentions. It is a technical clarity layer that amplifies the rest of your SEO and GEO work. If the data is incomplete, outdated or inconsistent with what the page shows the user, the benefit disappears (and in some cases can generate warnings in Google Search Console).
