WooCommerce stack

Recommended marketing stack for WooCommerce stores

Four layers that cover retention, measurement and growth on a WooCommerce store, with the tools I consider for each.

In short

For a WooCommerce store I recommend a four-layer stack: email/SMS, tracking, consent and ads/feeds. For each layer I list the tools I consider and the store stage they suit. The final choice depends on order volume, ad spend and the team available.

  • Email and SMS

The retention layer: welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase and win-back flows driven by WooCommerce order data. Pick one platform, not several. (klaviyo, omnisend, brevo, sender)

  • Tracking

GA4 and Google Tag Manager on a consistent eCommerce data layer; server-side tracking once ad spend justifies tighter control over the data sent to platforms. (GA4, Google Tag Manager, stape)

  • Consent

A CMP that collects GDPR-compliant consent and passes that state to Google Consent Mode v2 and the other tags before anything fires. (cookieyes, usercentrics)

  • Ads and feeds

Clean product feeds kept in sync with the catalogue, and conversions sent with correct values so ad platforms optimise on real data. (Google Merchant Center, Google Ads, Meta Ads)

Tools in this stack

Some links are affiliate links: if you sign up, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes my assessment. How this works

Which layer should I start with?

Usually consent and basic tracking, because without reliable data you cannot judge either email or ads. Email with the essential flows comes next. The rest can be added in stages.

Do I really need server-side tracking?

Not in every case. It makes more sense when ad spend is significant and you want more control over the data sent to platforms. It carries hosting and maintenance costs, which you should confirm with the vendor.

Do these tools work well together?

Generally yes, but the link between CMP, Consent Mode, GTM and email platforms has to be tested on each store. Tags firing before consent and duplicated purchase events are common, so I always validate the full set-up.
